Death Notice | Quad-City Times Davenport, Iowa January 24, 1909 Page 8 AGED CITIZEN IS KILLED BY TRAIN Hartwig F. Stender Run Down by Rock Island Passenger. Hartwig F. Stender, 60 years of age, was instantly killed by a Rock Island passenger train at Fifth and Warren streets Friday evening at 7:20 o'clock while on his way home from work. His neck and left leg were broken and his breast crushed. The body was hurled high in the air, alighting alongside the track and escaping mutilation by the wheels. The train was No. 61 and was bound southwest. The crew learned immediately there had been an accident. The train was stopped and backed to Warren street. The members of the crew promised that they would be present at the inquest, which will not be held until Monday probably, as the men will not return from their trip until then. Whether Mr. Stender stumbled attempting to cross in front of the approaching train is not known. He was a cripple and this condition may have retarded him, as it is presumed that he heard the train approaching from the East when he reached the crossing. He had stopped in at a saloon in the neighborhood. After having a drink and conversing for a few minutes with some of his friends he remarked that it was time for him to catch his car and he left. It was necessary for him to cross the tracks to catch a car for his home at 2319 McKinley avenue, where he had lived with Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Marinan, the latter being his daughter. Mr. Stender had been a resident of Davenport for 40 years, and for all of those years except five he had been in the employ of D. Regenitter Sons' company as teamster. He was a sober, industrious citizen, liked and esteemed by all who knew him, and his tragic ending will occasion much sorrow among his friends. He was a native of Denmark. The survivors are his three children, Mrs. Cornelius Mainan and Mrs. Robert Mullen of Davenport, and Mrs. Robert Atchison of Des Moines; a brother, Fritz Stender, Avoca, Iowa, and three sisters, Mrs. Jacob Strasser, Mrs. Pauline Boenker, and Mrs. Augusta Bartels, all of Davenport. The funeral will take place form the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Marinan, 2319 McKinley avenue, tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, and the interment will be in Fairmount cemetery. | |
