She was the daughter of Paul G. and Ruth Martin Tonsing, one of eight children in a long line of publishers, ministers, teachers and civic leaders. She proudly recalled her German ancestral roots with their strong, literate personalities. Among her family ties were Grandfather Paul A. She became a linotype operator at The Daily Oklahoman and Oklahoma City Times. Although they were divorced in the early 1950s, they each expressed fondness for the other in later years. He died in 1984.
Her work and need to support her family took her to Texas and the Fort Worth Star Telegram and to California and the San Francisco Chronicle. She set type at the Chronicle until her retirement in the mid-1970s. She was an active member of the International Typographical Union.
She lived in the South San Francisco, Millbrae and San Bruno, Calif., areas until 1988 when she moved south to Ojai, Calif, to live with her daughter, Martha. In 1989 she moved to Union, Mo., to live with her son, Paul. She was there until her death.
She is survived by her five children: Paul E. Denton of Union; Dorothy D. Linn of Asher; Jon R. Denton of Midwest City; M. David Denton of Mustang; Martha D. Kroner, Ojai; three brothers, Robert L. Tonsing, Wichita, her twin, Ernest F. Tonsing, Topeka, and Paul M. Tonsing, Fort Worth; and 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
