Pleasant Resident Alfred Southwick was born in Mayfield township, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, on September 7, 1837, and passed away at his home at 10107 Olivet Ave., N. E. Cleveland, Ohio on April 11, 1918, at the age of 80 years, seven months and four days, after an illness since November 1917. On February 14, 1861, he was married to Sarah A. Jones of Mayfield, Ohio, and in the fall of 1865 they moved to Kalamazoo county, Michigan. Here he lived for eight years, being engaged in farming and also operating a sawmill. In 1874 he moved to Ithaca, Gratiot county. Here he cleared up a new farm, erected buildings and lived for eight years. In 1882, he sold this farm, which was, at that time, considered th epremium farm in Gratiot county. They then moved to Lyons, Ionia county, where the family resided for two years. In 1884, he came to Mt. Pleasant and purchased th efarm known as the “Evergreen” just south of the city of Mt. Pleasant from the late Charles M. Brooks. He improved and erected the buildings and made this his home for about 22 years. In 1904, he disposed of this home and returned to Cleveland to spend his declining years among relatives, old school-mates, and his boy-hood associates. He leaves his wife and three children, Dr. C. B. M. Southwick, and Stella L. Consaul of Mt. Pleasant, and A. Bradley Southwick of Cleveland. A daughter, Laura, having died at her father’s home in Cleveland on September 9, 1907. The funeral was held at his late residence on Saturday, April 13, and burial was in the family lot beside his daughter in Lake View cemetery, Cleveland.
