  Death Notice	Ann Arbor News & Saline Reporter, July 11, 2013 Joan Nancy Christensen (Tonsing) On July 7, 2013, Joan Nancy Christensen, aged 74, passed away peacefully, after an amazing 12 year battle with liver cancer, with her immediate family by her side. Joan was born August 21, 1938 in Cleveland, Ohio the daughter of the late Mildred (nee Schorn) and Henry Tonsing. She married Robert Christensen on August 15, 1959. Joan was a successful artist and loving mother. Her artist career began with watercolor and oil painting. A pottery class, taught by her long time friend Carol Packard, sparked an interest in stoneware and porcelain sculpting that led to her successful business, The Frog Pond. Her creations were shown at numerous shops, art fairs and wildlife shows, including the Ann Arbor Art Fair during the 1980s. Joan loved traveling to the far corners of the earth with her husband and children. She set foot on all seven continents and crossed the Arctic and Antarctic circles. When she was home she enjoyed creating and tending to her much admired gardens that surround her home in Saline. Joan leaves behind her two children, James (Kim) Christensen and Lisa (Roger Moffat) Christensen; one granddaughter, Katherine Christensen; one sister, Carol Wilhelms, many beloved in-laws, 5 nephews, 4 nieces, 8 grand nephews, 9 grand nieces, 3 great grand nephews and 2 great grand nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert in 2005 and her grandson, Michael Latvala in 2006. Joan’s home was known to her family as a fun place to visit and a gathering place for many holiday celebrations. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Joan’s name to The Nature Conservancy.
