  Death Notice	Syracuse-Wawasee Journal, April 8, 1909, p. 4, col. 1 Tippecanoe George Washington Gilbert, was born in the state of Ohio, Sept. 8, 1835 and departed from this life April 2, 1909, age 73 years 6 months and 24 days. He was united in marriage to Susanna Rensbarger Oct. 10, 1857. She departed this life Sept. 6, 1863. To this union was born 4 children, still surviving him. He then married to Susanna Black, Feb. 25, 1864. To this union, there were 8 children born, of which 4 still survive him. She departed this life June 19, 1875. He was then united in marriage to Catherine Black June 28, 1878. She departed this life January 19, 1909. To this union there were 2 children born, who survive him, and two step daughters survive him. He was united to the German Babtist Church in his early days and lived a devoted Christian life to the end. He leaves a host of relatives and friends to mourn his departure. The funeral services were held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Baintertown church. Rev. Daniel Rothenberger was the officiating clergyman.

• Notes

  may have served in the Civil War, 123rd Indiana Infantry, Co. A, corpl., M540, roll 27, mustered in 18 Nov 1863, mustered out 29 May 1865. Living in Greensburg, Indiana. Age 42 in 1863--wrong age. Lived on a farm about four miles northeast of Goshen on the old Goshen and Middlebury road for several years . George was well remembered by the picnics which were held in his grove.
