PLAIN DEALER: We are called upon to announce the death of one of the oldest citizens of the town, Mr. Samuel Southwick, who died at his residence at Wilson’s Mills in Mayfield, on Sunday, October 5th. Mr. Southwick was born at Adams, Mass., on the 3rd of December 1792, and was consequently nearly eighty-one years of age at the time of his death. He came to Cuyahoga county in the year 1834 and was among the first settlers of the town. Nowithstanding the hardships and privations with which the early settlers had to undergo, Mr. Southwick through perseverance and economy, succeeded in making a comfortable property, and had the satisfaction of seeing his children--three sons and one daughter--comfortably settled in life, two of the sons having died some years ago, leaving a son and daughter to comfort him in his declining years. He was living with his second wife at the time of his death, his first wife having departed this life seventeen years and on day before him. He was a man that was noted for integrity, brightness and fair dealding, a man of enterprise and public spirit he was a man with many friedns and he had but few enemies. He will be much missed in the community where he lived. He was a firm believer in the Christian religion, he being many years a member of the United Brethren church. He died in the ???, “Though the earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, he had a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” He leaves a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his death. His funeral was largely attended on Tuesdday, the 7th, inst. at the United Brethren church, at Wilson’s Mills. The services were conducted by the Rev. J. B. Goodrich, pastor of the M. E. Church, who preached a very able discourse from the last clause of the twelfth verse of the fourth chapter of Amos.

    Southwick House
The Southwick House is a landmark of the Chagrin River Valley. It adjoins the Chagrin Valley Hunt Club where it serves as a museum for the Gates Mills Historical Society. The Southwick house was built about 1834 by Lemuel Southwick, who, with his wife Rhoda Arnold, came from New York State by canal to Buffalo, and then to Cleveland on the Walk-in-the-Water--the first steamship to ply the waters of Lake Erie. In the fall of 1821, on her last trip of the season, the Walk-in-the-Water was wrecked near Buffalo in a terrible storm while all her passengers were at supper.
The Southwick family met at the family homestead in January 1999, in Gates Mills, to attend the funeral of an aunt. They used the occasion to reminisce, from stories they had heard, about the early days and hardships of living on a farm in pre-Civil War days in Ohio.
The senior Southwicks recalled from their parents that children occupied the one large bedroom on the second floor of the home. Children under the age of three were designated to sleep in cradles outside the bathroom, and only after their birthday would they be allowed to join their older siblings. The parents slept in the other small bedroom.
The family gave the historical society a large carpenter’s wooden tool box made and used by Peleg Sherman in his sawmill. They also donated a large cast key for the historic sawmill.
In attendance were Linda Southwick Morse, Lydia Southwick, Chris Southwick, Brad and Terry Southwick, and descendents of the Sherman family.
